Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Yusaku

While within the IMA you'll discover amazing exhibits like Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Yusaku, a contemporary Japanese artist known for his highly energetic brushstroke. This is the first large-scale exhibition and United States debut of the artist’s paintings, which is exciting for art lover's who visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art because you get to see Tawara Yusaku's creations first!

Executed primarily in ink on paper, Tawara uses the cumulative effect of many brushstrokes to create powerful and expressive works, apparent in even his smallest 3 in. x 5 in. paintings. Although Tawara eschewed representational art, many of his paintings recall traditional ink landscapes or other forms in nature.

Ever-changing, like the beautiful gardens you discover at the IMA, the Indianapolis Museum of Art also proud to celebrate the addition of a new sculpture and sound installation as part of the IMA’s Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion series from Brooklyn-based artist William Lamson. This work will be on display through the end of August. The installation – Lamson’s largest and most ambitious work to date – will re-animate a former communications tower by transforming it into a monumental sound producing object.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is a calming environment where we're welcome to explore, discover, and participate in art rather than just admire the beautiful works of art from a distance. Stroll among the gardens and creative works found within 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park and you feel time slip away as you admire the natural beauty and works of art.

Among our favorite events at the Indianapolis Museum of Art is the Annual Summer Nights film series, which start early in June and runs through Mid August. This is a wonderful way to get out and enjoy the museum art exhibits, and then relax with family and friends and catch a movie on a Friday evening in the IMA’s amphitheater, located on the west side of the Museum and facing 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.

Highlights of the Indianapolis Museum of Art's extensive art collection include the Samuel Josefowitz Collection of Gauguin and the School of Pont-Aven; the Holliday Collection of Neo-Impressionism, featuring the work of Georges Seurat, the largest collection of works by J.M.W. Turner outside of Great Britain; one of the most outstanding collections of Japanese Edo-period paintings in the nation; and more than 2,000 objects in the African art collection. Other important collections include Chinese ceramics, West Asian rugs and contemporary studio glass. And, this is just a sample of the collections and exhibits you'll discover at the IMA!
