While traveling the Highways and Byways, we find works of art dedicated to historic places, spaces, and people. One sculpture we like is this Madonna Of The Trail sculpture in Glen Miller Park located at 2200 East Main Street in Richmond, Indiana. The pioneer woman’s expression is determined - prepared to protect her family.
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) were committed to marking the “Old Trails Road” route. The women were inspired by Portland, Oregon’s 1905 Sacajawea monument, which is located in Washington Park. This beautiful work of art was commissioned by suffragists to honor both Sacagawea and the “pioneer mother of Oregon.”
Imagine That … U.S. President Harry S. Truman led the National Old Trails Road Association (NOTR), and would later speak at the first monument dedication in 1928.
When traveling, you can find the twelve Madonna of the Trail sculptures located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
