Albany Celebrates Dutch Traditions At The Tulip Fest

Time for tulips

Held in May over Mother’s Day weekend, the Tulip Fest continues to honor traditions dating back more than half a century. This is a fun FREE event, and among these Dutch traditions that entertain guests of all ages is the Scrubbing of State Street. To kick things off teams residents fully clad in Hollanders attire will use soap, brushes, and buckets of water to physically wash State Street in preparation for the festivities ahead.

Then, there is the Tulip Queen Coronation that will take place among more than 200,000 tulips. This is another of the original Dutch traditions, and acknowledges hardworking young women in the community as ambassadors for Albany. And, since it's Mother’s Day weekend one deserving mom will also be crowned Mother of the Year.

Held at Albany’s historic Washington Park, the Tulip Fest will include a exciting mix of activities to enjoy, which include:

  • Musical entertainment on several stages in the park all weekend.
  • Almost a hundred crafters displaying their creations for purchase that range from paintings and toys, to furniture and art work.
  • Sample a mix of traditional carnival snacks to international cuisine like pasta e fagioli.

It's going to be a exciting time in Albany. And, everyone can enjoy visiting the Kids Zone that will also include live music, magicians, a chess tent, a rock climbing wall, and more fun to enjoy.
