Supported by Bank of America, the California African American Museum presents the Willie Birch: Stories to Tell exhibition that runs through October. The exhibition is the first-ever career retrospective of Willie Birch, presenting his groundbreaking pieces from 1968 to now.
Born and raised in New Orleans and trained in Europe, Baltimore, and New York, Birch often talks about “retentions,” which he uses to describe how one culture’s stories and traditions show up in another. Over his career, Birch has especially looked at how African traditions have stayed alive in music, art, and culture in America, all part of the Black experience and more.
Through his work as an artist, community organizer, and cultural thinker, Birch has been asking why some things stick around while others don’t, digging up some tough truths about what it means to be American, but also opening up new ways to see the world, think about art, and tell stories in a bigger way.
