From the ancient metropolis of Cahokia Mounds to the start of Route 66 in Chicago, Illinois has always been a crossroads of culture, innovation, and conflict. The 250th anniversary is a state-wide invitation for all 102 counties to share their "untold stories."
This year’s events go beyond reading plaques or visiting memorials. They offer a rare opportunity to connect with America and share your personal thoughts on the state with the Illinois Voices 250 project. Among the narratives be recorded and preserved in the Library of Congress are those of the state’s Indigenous nations, immigrants, and everyday citizens, who helped shape the social fabric of the United States.
A Journey of Discovery
In addition to sharing the voices of the residents, they hope everyone across the state to download the Illinois 250 Passport. The limited-edition keepsake encourages residents to visit historical, cultural, and heritage sites across every region of the state, turning the anniversary into a journey of discovery.
Whether you travel the trails of the Shawnee National Forest, or wander the Illinois and Michigan Canal, the "Pursuit of Happiness" is waiting to be shared through recreation, conservation, and spiritual connections.
Laying out bridge to the future, Illinois also presents America’s Field Trip - an opportunity for students to share - What America means to them?
