Indianapolis is known for racing, and racers are prepared an exciting run of the annual Pinewood Derby, happening now thru April 6th at Indiana State Museum.
Spectators will gather to cheer on their favorites as the Pinewood Derby cars are speed down the two-story, 125-foot track and cross the finish line.
New racers can find details on creating the cars, or they can borrow a car from the Indiana State Museum collection.
The race is open to everyone and is included in museum admission. Gather your group and get some practice because Race Day is April 5th, and the track will only be open to registered racers and closed to the public.

Indiana State Museum Exhibits
Cardboard Storyland - In addition to the Pinewood Derby, the museum presents - Cardboard Storyland, a new exhibit at the museum, allows visitors to create stories with colorful characters in four different worlds. Jordan Hillman, a local artist, designed the characters, including a dragon, dog, alien, and superhero, with unique personalities and non-traditional color palettes.
Through the Eyes of an Artist - John Wesley Hardrick, a lifelong Indianapolis resident, is celebrated for his paintings that capture the essence of life in the city, particularly Black life. His work, including portraits of celebrities and everyday community members, earned him national recognition. The new exhibit, “Through the Eyes of an Artist,” highlights Hardrick’s life and work alongside other artists, emphasizing the diverse paths to pursuing creative passions.
Dream Tomorrow Today - Children can become STEM recruits and solve problems, build inventions, and design a future city in “Dream Tomorrow Today”. The exhibit, located on level three, is included with museum admission and runs through May 4, 2025.
