The Gibbes Museum of Art honored Spike Lee at its 2024 Distinguished Lecture Series. The event, livestreamed for students nationwide, is now available to all.
The conversation, moderated by Pauline Forlenza and Angela Mack, explored Lee's cultural impact and commitment to authenticity and social justice.
During his comments, Spike Lee championed the vital role of African American artists in the South, especially during this crucial time for their culture. He also shared works from his collection by African American southern artists that influenced his work, including: William H. Johnson (born in South Carolina); Romare Bearden (born in North Carolina); Deborah Roberts (Texas); Radcliffe Bailey (Georgia); and Michael Ray Charles (Louisiana).
Lee discussed how these artists have always been creative sources of artistic expression for his film work, and for his ongoing creativity in arts and entertainment. See the Gibbes Museum of Art website for current news, events and tickets.
