Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design

The presentation of the Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design exhibition is colorful and bold. Her works have earned her two Academy Awards in film and television. To wear the creations is to let imagination soar as the stories unfold as we see in this special exhibition that opened this May at Jamestown Settlement.

"Our ancestors dreamed of Afrofuturism in Jamestown! I’m excited and honored to present “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design” and connect the story of our journey from 1619 to Wakanda," Ruth E. Carter

Ruth E. Carter is a two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer, and her works converge with historical fashion. The collection includes clothing styles and dress, from bodices and breeches to tailored suits. Also included are the powerful pieces for acclaimed films and television such as “Yellowstone,” “Roots,” “Amistad,” “Malcolm X,” “Selma,” “Do the Right Thing” and “Black Panther.”

The special exhibition also showcases the work of Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation historical tailors. These are the folks who dress interpreters depicting people living in early America. And, some pieces are based on period portraits and surviving garments on display in the museum’s gallery exhibits. The traveling exhibit, organized by Ruth Costume Design and curated by Julia Long, will be on display for six months through December 1.

"Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design" is included with general admission to Jamestown Settlement. An annual pass offers year-round access to the special exhibition, along with daytime programs and events.

Residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive complimentary admission to both museums with proof of residency. Parking is free.
