North Dakota Recreation For All Seasons

Recreation For All Seasons

The beauty of nature inspires moments of awe at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Dedicated in 1947, the 70,000-acre park has been divided and shaped by mother nature into two large units. The south unit was forged by wind, fire and the meandering Little Missouri River. On northern side we discovered thick forest and steep buttes, perfect for hiking.

The parks, which honors Theodore Roosevelt, who ranched in the Badlands and later established the national park system, offer outstanding wildlife viewing. Be sure to bring your camera to catch photos of buffalo, deer, antelope, coyote, prairie dogs, wild horses and bald eagles, which call the Theodore Roosevelt National Park home.

Saddle up and hitch a ride on a covered wagon and travel the same path as Lewis and Clark. The trail begins near Mandan, N.D., and ends at Fort Mandan, where you'll find Lewis and Clark’s reconstructed 1804-1805 winter quarters, near Washburn, N.D. Join your host, the West River Teamsters, who serve up breakfast daily at 6 a.m. Guests can stretch their legs on the regular rest stops and enjoy a lunch break before reaching camp for the evening meal at the end of the day’s ride, followed by a campfire and good company. Lewis and Clark enthusiasts join the group throughout the trip to share stories and songs of the era, Native American culture and other North Dakota specialties. Whether you’re at a working ranch or on a guided trail ride, you’re sure to take in some breathtaking North Dakota scenery from the saddle on a horse.

North Dakota transforms into a winter paradise where travelers can hit the slopes at area resorts and state parks. Enjoy snowboarding or hop on a snowmobile and trek through North Dakota's winter wonderland. North Dakota has 17 snowmobile trails that cover 3,000 miles of groomed trails and 800 miles of ungroomed trails to explore. For a true challenge try one of North Dakota cross-country ski trails designed to challenge the novice and advanced skiers. Among the most popular cross-country ski trails are Cross Ranch, Turtle River and Lake Metigoshe State parks, as well as Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site.
