Rock and Roll at the Orion Independent Music Festival

Where can you find a gathering of fifty artists from five different countries? At the Orion Independent Music Festival, taking place in Mid January in one of the world's most renowned ski resort towns. Coming from all over the U.S. and Sweden, Chile, Australia, and Canada, the artists represent an array of musical genres that will cater to every whim of those looking to discover new talent following a day on Park City's powdery slopes. Among the artist expected at this year's festival are Kettlefish, Peter Brienholt, Andy Frasco and Kole Hansen.

"We have featured an exciting line-up of some of the best independent artists today, who will perform the regions most popular live music venues," says festival CEO and founder Steffon Olsen. "Our goal is to revolutionize the music industry by providing an international forum for high-caliber talent to be discovered by music industry professionals and fans alike."

Most of the acts are independent artist, but this does not mean they haven't rocked along with big named musicians. Take The Lost Boys, this teenage rock band out of Lakeport, CA who performed at last year's inaugural event; they've already opened for national acts such as Kelly Clarkson, All-American Rejects, and 3 Doors Down. Then there's Jon Davidson from Portland, OR was runner up for Best Male Artist of the Year at the 2009 Portland Music Awards and has toured in five countries. Singles from his 2008 debut solo album have been played on a variety of radio formats, including modern rock, AAA, and country.

Other bands who've played at Orion Independent Music Festival include the Muza from Santiago, Chile incorporates electronica, rock, and Latin styles into her unique sound. Now touring the U.S., Muza previously won an Independent Music Award for Best Dance/Electronica album in 2006. Adding a touch of the Southwest is The Jeremy Miller Band from Austin, TX, a staple of the Southwest music scene. The Jeremy Miller Band plays over 100 shows per year, and blends county and power rock to make for a gritty, raw sound and high-energy, live performances.

Opening ceremonies last year were held at Park City's historic Egyptian Theater during which Park City Mayor Dana Williams welcomed festival attendees and treated them to some of his own original music. Along with the festivities at the Egyptian Theater, fans enjoyed music at these great venues in Park City, which included Cisero's, Doolan's, Downstairs, Flanagan's, The Sidecar, The Spur Bar & Grill, The Star Bar, and in Salt Lake City at The Woodshed, Studio 600, and Speakeasy.
