The third largest state in the nation, California became a state in Sept of 1850. The state's capital was settled in 1839 by Johann Augustus Sutter, who was given 48,000 acres of land by the Mexican government and Governor Alvarado. Just a few years earlier Gold was discovered about 30 miles east of Sacramento. Known for its great woods, diverse cultures, and of course, Hollywood stars, the state offers an eclectic mix of treasures to explore.
