I happen to notice a Bell that is located on the site where Freeney's Tavern once stoodReviewing our collection of photos from our recent trip to Montgomery, Alabama I happen to notice a Bell that is located on the site where Freeney's Tavern once stood. Located along the side of The Exchange, a comfortable and welcome bar at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center, I realized that few people probably realize the Bell's even there.

If they do, they most likely give it a passing glance and go on with their casual conversation. Funny thing is that back in the day when Montgomery was little more than a river town, this was the location where people gathered to catch up on news in the community and share a drink. So here we are today, and people are still gathering on this historic site to relax after a day of business meetings or touring Montgomery's many attractions.

Strange how times change, yet some things remains the same. What makes this site interesting is that Freeney's Bell is rung every day at 5pm in honor of the old tavern that once stood on the site. And, it was just our luck that we were invited to a reception at the Montgomery Art Museum, where we met Freeney, and many of Montgomery's other characters. Of course, they characters were actors revive their historic counterparts for our entertainment, but it was a fun occasion none-the-less. As for Freeney, you can also find him weaving his historic tales at Old Alabama Town, where History Lives!

This authentic 19th Century Village is a great place to learn more about Alabama's history, and I love that the gentleman whom we met is carrying on his role as Freeney for everyone to enjoy. Throughout Old Alabama Town you'll discover authentic 19th and early 20th century homes and buildings that have been saved from demolition, carefully restored, and reopened to the public as a history museum. It is an exciting trip through time to when early Americans of all backgrounds lived and worked in Central Alabama.

Old Alabama Town

Join Montgomery's early settlers and events at Old Alabama Town

Join Montgomery's early settlers and events at Old Alabama Town The Landmarks Foundation and City of Montgomery have a unique partnership that has allowed for the restoration and interpretation of over 50 authentically restored 19th and early 20th century structures stretching along six blocks in downtown historic Montgomery.

One of the highlights of your visit to Old Alabama Town is the Ordeman House, which has become the nucleus around which Landmarks' Old Alabama Town has grown. When you visit you can choose to go on a groups tours or a self-guided tour of Old Alabama Town. On a self-guided tour you'll receive a property map to guide you on your walking tour of our Living and Working Blocks. This is a great way to tour the sites in Old Alabama Town, plus if you want to go out and get a bite to eat, you can leave and return throughout the day.

The fun part is the costumed interpreters like Freeney's character, who are available on each block to answer questions. The costumed interpreters make the tours not only interesting, but also take you back in time to experience the lives of those who contributed to the great state of Alabama. There are also many events held throughout the year at the Old Alabama Town. In Late March is the Annual Alabama Book Festival, which will feature over 50 nationally recognized authors and presenters, as well as book appraisers and publishers.

As you know in the South they love any reason for a festive event and there are plenty of Festivals to join at Old Alabama Town. Whether you're looking for a special day out on Mother's Day or a great place to take the family, you're certain to enjoy your visit to Old Alabama Town!
