Join The Pioneer Day Festivities At The Colbert Ferry Visitor Center

Join the Pioneer Day at the Colbert Ferry Visitor CenterHistory is filled with many stories and adventures, and in Alabama these tales come to life at various festivals and re-enactments throughout the year, and at historic sites around the state. The states name actually means a Tribal Town in the language of the Alabama tribe, which tells us this state has a rich and ancient story to be told.

Gather up the family and friends and head to explore Alabama's history with hands-on activities and more at Pioneer Day at the Colbert Ferry Visitor Center, located at milepost 327 near Cherokee, Alabama. This event takes places every first Saturday of the month. Throughout the day you'll find Living History Demonstrations that reveal how challenging it was for pioneers, and the how they adapted to living in the area from the 1700s to 1840.

Pioneer Day takes place between 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and is a great outing for families. Kids, and adults alike will enjoy watching pioneers performs activities that often include corn shuck doll making, basket weaving, leatherworking, and mountain dulcimer demonstrations. Children are often invited to participate by dressing up in pioneer clothes and trying these activities firsthand. The best part is a trip to Pioneer Day won't break the budget because the program is Free to the public. To learn more about activities and the events scheduled call (800) 305-7417.

Did You Know? - Stars & Bars, the first flag of the confederacy, was adopted in 1861. Because it was so similar to the US flag, a second flag adopted in 1863, the Stainless Banner. This flag resembled a flag of truce and fell limp around the pole, so the Confederate Congress added a red bar to the flag in 1865, making this Alabama's third national flag.

These are a sample of the exciting historic events held annually in Alabama. We look forward to discovering more local festivities on our next trip!
