Among
the early settlers in Alabama were the French, who established
Ft. Toulouse in 1717. Today, you can explore
the reconstructed 1700's Ft. Toulouse within a 165-acre park near Montgomery,
Alabama. Ft. Toulouse is also home to the William Bartram Arboretum, museum,
historic buildings, Indian mound and “living history” reenactments.
Another way to experience Alabama's Frontier history is to join the Alabama Frontier Days. This annual celebration brings to life the Frontier days through a reenactment of the Alabama during the 18th and early 19th century, which included the French Colonial times to the early American period.
During the event Ft Toulouse is transformed into a French Colonial Marines War of 1812 camp. There are Native Artists who spin and weave, Blacksmiths, and of course the Military Encampment to explore. The Alabama Frontier Days are also a fun way to educate children about our nation's history and enjoy a family outing.
Another fun historic site is Old Alabama Town in Montgomery, where you'll discover authentic 19th and early 20th century homes and buildings that have been saved from demolition, carefully restored, and reopened to the public as a history museum. It is an exciting trip through time to when early Americans of all backgrounds lived and worked in Central Alabama.
