Wine Across America: A Photographic Road Trip, by Szilvia Gogh

Book ReviewsAll 50 American States are represented with wineries in this exceptional documentation of an 80,000 mile journey by photographer, Charles O'Rear, and writer, Daphne Larkin.

Wine Across America not only captures beautiful grapes and vineyards, but it also captures everyday people working in the fields. Throughout the book one witnesses the dirty hand of a small business owner, a waiter balancing 25 crystal wine glasses, people inspecting barrels, well-worn boots, tools of the trade, an employee climbing into a stainless steel tank prior to washing it before the next harvest. The authors are clearly in love with wine and every aspect of winemaking.

Award-winning journalist, Larkin is a skillful writer specializing in the wine industry. She guides the reader through regions from Alaska, to Colorado, to Florida in an informatively fascinating manner. One can almost picture herself in the footsteps of their quest to learn everything about wine making, from seeing all the vineyards, to tasting every harvest. Former National Geographic photographer, O'Rear's photographs are quite unusual in a sense.

It almost feels there is no photographer - the viewer is the one looking at the objects or people in action. The viewer feels as if they are part of the wine making rather than being a spectator.

This book captures an entrepreneurial spirit similar to that of early American pioneers. Today, a winemaking explosion is occurring all over the country, and wine is now being made in every single U.S. state. WINE ACROSS AMERICA celebrates this diverse group of entrepreneurs, which includes everyone from former cattle ranchers to retirees.

The journey through the pages of the book reflect the joy, pride and passion of America's winegrower, winemakers, and wine drinkers from coast to coast. Definitely a must have item for every wine lovers' book selection.
