Family Fun In
Delaware, Where History Comes To Life, By MSchubert
As one of the 13 original colonies and the first
state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, Delaware played a pivotal role in early
American history. Interactive exhibits and hands-on activities help bring the
past alive for the young and the young-at heart. At Wilmington’s
Delaware
History Museum, kids can check out a life-sized American Indian
long house and explore a home hiding
escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. They’ll marvel at the size of the
world’s largest fry pan and get a kick out of trying on vintage clothing in
“Grandma’s Attic.”
From pristine beaches and bays to rolling hills and unspoiled
woodlands, Delaware provides many opportunities for outdoor exploring.
Delaware's Hidden Treasures
At the
DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museumin Fenwick Island,
kids can get a close-up view of relics recovered from ancient shipwrecks, many
of which were found off the Delaware coast. After a tour of the museum, they can
hunt for their own buried treasure by renting a metal detector on-site and
heading out to Coin Beach, where King George III coins can still be found.
At Trap Pond
State Parkin Laurel, a canoe trip through the Bald Cypress Swamp
is a great way to spot many forms of wildlife, including songbirds, turtles, and
maybe a beaver or two. After a day on the water, families can spend the night in
some of the most exotic accommodations under the stars -- yurtz, dome-shaped
tents that originate from Mongolian nomads.
For some high-flying fun, families
head to the Air Mobility Command Museumon
Dover Air Force Base. The museum houses some of the most unique
and distinguished military flying machines used over the last 50 years. Visitors
can stand in the bomb bay of a B-17, view the colossal C-5 Galaxy transport, and
examine the combat scars of a C-47.
For the
child who thinks milk comes from a grocery store, a visit to Dover’s
Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village is the perfect excursion. Here, more than 4,000
agriculture-related artifacts, including a crop duster, antique tractors, an
authentic 18th century log house and the first broiler chicken house, are on
display. A host of special events held throughout the year give children the
opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in farm life.
