History's Triumphs & Trails

York County is the site of a plot to overthrow George Washington. If the plot, the Conway Cabal, was not thwarted in York’s Golden Plough Tavern, George Washington may have never become the nation’s first president. York is also the first capital of the United States as the Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation in York. Key attractions for many visitors are the many interesting manufacturing tours offered in the area. York manufacturing played an important historical role in World War II. Among the many historical footnotes was the development of The York Plan, the model used for World War II production.

Travel back in time to the only pre-Prohibition brewery complex left in North America at Bube’s Brewery. Sooth your sweet tooth with tasty treats from Wolfgang Candies; voted one of the “Top 5 Tasty Tours,” by the Food Network. Try your hand at winemaking on a tour one of the area’s premier wineries where you can participate in the process from processing the grapes to the bottling. Enjoy a salty treat at Martin’s famous Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, the bipartisan snack aboard Air Force One during both the George W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations and get in a twist at Snyder’s of Hanover, America’s Pretzel Bakery since 1909.

Movie Buffs will enjoy a visit to the Family Heirloom Weavers, whose woven heirlooms have been used in movies like Cold Mountain, starring Nicole Kidman. Hand woven coverlets can be purchased from Family Heirloom Weavers who create many period props for numerous motion pictures. They are also known for creating period reproductions used in seven presidential homes. These are only a few of the many tours available in York County, PA.; the Factory Tour Capital of the World.
