Oregon's Clandestine Spring Break, By Ben Randall

Oregon Coast tends to be the most popular destination for North-westerners on spring break, yet there's so much about the region that's unknown. There are numerous places and aspects to Oregon's shoreline that are under the radar of most vacationers.

Wild Natural Phenomenon

One of the best resources for these charming and stunning secrets is  http://www.beachconnection.net, called Oregon Coast Beach Connection, which recently started its "Adventures in Spring Break" section, at http://www.beachconnection.net/family. It's there you can find dozens of dining, lodging and beach secrets for young and old alike during this season. The website also includes a whole section about weather facts and tips for beach trips that may surprise you, like the period just after all the spring breaks from the various school districts is called the "secret spring," referring to the deserted state of the beaches, better lodging deals and wild natural phenomenon that at times verges on something from "The X-Files."

Weather Changes

One of the most interesting aspects of coastal weather at this time of year is that it can go up and down within minutes, creating some unusual and memorable spectacles. On the other hand, this dynamic is a pain in the butt if you're on a long beach walk during a spell of sunny weather and you get soaked by a sudden rainsquall because you didn't bring your coast. Nasty. So you'll want to bring a long various changes of clothing on your Oregon coast beach jaunt. Whatever you do, make sure you bring along more than one pair of shoes and socks. It's way too easy to get these wet - and they usually stay that way for a whole day. You'll most certainly want to wear sandals or flip-flops while bouncing around the sand.

Seafood Sensations

In the world of cuisine, don't miss the delirium-inducing seafood on the scenic, pristine Tillamook Bay at Pacific Oyster. It's literally on the bay - on a dock jutting into the bay. You can't get much fresher than this. They have a cioppino to die for. It's thick, hearty and so stocked full of a variety of fish it puts a hatchery to shame. The oysters are like tender little chunks of beef: extremely rich and flavorful, quite powerful for their miniscule size. The smoked salmon burger is wonderful as well, and the view of the bay magnificent. 5150 Oyster Drive. (503) 377-2323.

Cannon Beach

When hunger strikes in the Cannon Beach area, there's the tiny little wonder called Fultano's Pizza. Try the penne pasta with meat sauce and meatballs. These handcrafted delights are exceptional, with a marvelously multi-layered taste to them, like the subtleties you find in fine wine. The meat sauce is partially responsible for this, also with a few layers of goodness all its own. This place is a truly gourmet discovery, yet not only is it totally kid friendly but thoroughly has a romance element as well.  Another highlight: the seriously delectable pizza with a sauce made from mashed grapes. This is absolutely fantastic and truly unique. 200 N. Hemlock and Second Street. (503) 436-9717.

Wheeler

In the tiny bayside town of Wheeler, it's pure pizza heaven at a fairly new eatery called Guido's Ristorante. The staff here is constantly hilarious - a little like watching the cast of "Seinfeld" interacting. But it's the grub that's the real star of the show, with a thick, even juicy crust beneath a forest-like covering of innovative ingredients. Phil, the main chef, has a cult following of customers who ask him to "experiment" on them, and allow him to create a pizza masterpiece based on a few guidelines - such as one or two favorite ingredients. From there, he takes control and adds innovative toppings according to inspiration. Their list of toppings is extensive, it also has an outstanding view of the bay and there's a deliciously hip retro lounge in the back. 675 Hwy 101, Wheeler. (503) 368-7778.

The place is extremely manicured, with a cozy old world charm, hard wood floors, chandeliers, claw foot bathtubs and views of the untouched and pure Nehalem Bay. It's been nicknamed the "Westin-Benson of the Oregon Coast," and it is one of those places where first discoveries turn people into addicted, returning customers. Hwy 101 and Gregory. Yet another wonder of the north Oregon coast is the castle-like bed & breakfast called Arch Cape House - just a ways south of Cannon Beach. Here, antiques filled these rooms, and the place looks like resembles something between a castle and a ski lodge. The garden is a bit of fantasia come to life, and the gourmet breakfast in the morning is legendary for good reason. East Ocean Rd. - S. of Cannon Beach. http://www.archcapehouse.com. 800-436-2848.

The Nye Beach District Of Newport

On Oregon's central coast, the Nye Beach district of Newport oozes charm and history throughout its several square blocks. This adorable little neighborhood sits up against the beach, with numerous buildings stuck in time and the streets recently redone to resemble something slightly Victorian. In accordance with this vibe, there's the Grand Victorian B&B, which features exceptional gourmet breakfast in the morning and a stunning interior that mimics the world of over 100 years ago. 105 NW Coast Street, Newport. http://www.grandvictorianor.com. 503-508-4820.
