Travel along the rolling hills of western Iowa you'll discover the Old World Charm of Danish Immigrates & natural beauty. Whether you embrace the Traditions, Customs, & Heritage of your Danish heritage or ride a carnival ride at the State fair there's always something new to discover in Iowa.

Hans Christian Andersen

As a child I recall the Fairy Tales my Aunt told me by Hans Christian Andersen. Among the celebration held at the Danish Windmill this year was the annual Tivoli Fest over Memorial Day Weekend. The “Tivoli: A Fairy Tale Land” celebrated Hans Christian Andersen 200th birthday with music and festivities throughout the weekend. This is just one of the exciting events held throughout the year at the Danish Windmill.

Old World Charm

Traveling across America you find many unique sites you might not expect. Turn the bend ahead and who knows what you'll find? We heard about the annual Spring Tulip Time Festival and were curious about the Old World charm the area offered. We happen to be traveling through Iowa when we came across a bit of Old World Charm and Danish culture in heart Elk Horn in Western Iowa. The town also has a wonderful selection of unique shops and sightseeing attractions, but the highlight of our visit was experiencing the rich Danish heritage of the area.

Danish Traditions, Customs, and Heritage

There are also programs and visitors can find a extensive collections of artifacts and exhibits on display in the Danish Immigrant Museum dedicated to preserving the culture and history of the Danish immigrates who settled in America. Visitors can tour the authentic 1848 Danish Windmill and participate in special programs or browse through the mill museum and learn about Danish Traditions, Customs, and Heritage, the history of Elk Horn, Iowa, and Tourist Information. The Danish Windmill summer hours are Monday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Winter hours are Monday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Largest Rural Danish Settlement In The U.S.

Beautiful homes decorated in Danish style dot the landscape of Elk Horn; the largest rural Danish settlement in the U.S. The Danish families who live in the area still honor a the customs of their homeland. Incorporated in 1901, visitors to the town of Elk Horn enjoy the small town charm and Danish touches like hand-crafted, miniature windmills found on manicured lawns around town. The warmth and hospitality we received made our trip a enchanting experience.

Danish Bed & Breakfasts

To experience a relaxing weekend and delicious Danish food stay at one of the Danish B & B's in town. The Hansen's Kro Danish Bed & Breakfast serves a full Danish breakfast  on lovely Danish dinnerware. Relax in the comfort of a beautiful home decorated in Danish decor. The friendly Danish hospitality make a stay in a full suite with private bath a wonderful experience. Call for reservations, (712) 764-2052 or 1-800-606-2052.
