Adair, Iowa: Site Of The First Train Robbery

It is hard to miss the huge smiling face on the Water Tower in Adair, which greets travelers driving across Iowa on Interstate 80. It was on July 21, 1873 when the first train robbery in the West took place a just West of Adair, Iowa.

The outlaw, Jesse James and his notorious gang staged the robbery when they heard that a shipment of gold worth $75,000 would roll through Adair. Thanks to a delay the James Gang was only able to heist about $3000.00 before fleeing to Missouri, where they divided their loot and went their separate ways. Today, Adair holds the Annual Jesse James Days, where guests can enjoy a parade and re-enactment of the Train Robbery during Mid-July.
