Hunting In Iowa

While you will not find Big Game like lions and tigers in the woods, Hunter can discover a variety of wildlife to hunt, including migrating waterfowl like ducks and geese and game birds like pheasants. Iowa is also known as one of the best states to hunt white-tailed deer and turkey. Drive along Interstate 35 south of Des Moines in early mornings and you can’t help but notice the flocks of turkeys wandering among the fields. With some of the largest turkeys caught and many of the top 100 trophy bucks harvested in the state, Iowa has become known as one of the top hunting destinations in the country.

Among the popular summer activities is canoeing and tubing the Des Moines, Iowa and Winnebago rivers. In Iowa Clear Lake, Brushy Creek Lake, Lake Red Rock and Lake Rathbun in Central Iowa are among the favorite spots for fishing, boating and camping.

Take  A Break After The Hunt & Enjoy A Relaxing Stroll Through The Bickelhaupt Arboretum 

After a day out on the hunt why not take a relaxing stroll through the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, located at  340 S. 14th Street, in Clinton, Iowa. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum was voted one of the "Top 10 Lawns with a View in the Midwest" by Briggs & Stratton in 2003.  This fourteen-acre outdoor museum of select-labeled trees, shrubs, ground covers, perennials and annuals, features one of the top garden conifer collections in the country, numbering more than 600 cultivars. This is a beautiful place where you can explore the library and museum display of native animals and birds. The wonderful thing is that the Bickelhaupt Arboretum is Free, and open to the public year round from dawn to dusk. Tours are conducted for groups by appointment.

Did You Know?

Just up the river in LeClaire, Iowa in 1846, the famous showman of the West, Buffalo Bill Cody was born, and lived there during his boyhood years. Cody, who worked for the Pony Express and as an Indian and Army scout was a experienced horseman and an excellent marksman. The original Buffalo Bill Cody homestead still stands in Iowa today for travelers to visit.
