Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District, By MSchubert

While wandering Richmond, Indiana in search of unique crafts and a bit of historic lore we stumbled upon a few surprises in Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District, which included a giant chair and beautiful murals.

Travel America and you'll discover many cities are hard at work on the revival of their historic districts. The beauty of the restoring our industrial past is that by reusing these nostalgic 9th and early 20th century industrial structures we are preserving the history and spirit of our communities.

The "Old-Side" Of Town

As a child I recall visiting the "old-side" of town where we shopped in the city market on Sundays and enjoyed a Root-Beer Float at the A&W. Now a days you'll find the "old-side" of town is the hip place to live, the center of nightlife, and a haven for boutiques, unique shops, coffee houses, and great dining.

On our visit to Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District we found wonderful restaurants like Paulee's, Little Sheba's and Joe's Pizza, known as "The Best Little Pizza House In Town," a coffee bar named Charlie's, unique shops like Foster's "E" Street Antiques Gallery, unique furniture stores, lively clubs like Doc Handy's Social Club, and the 4th Street Blues Club, and the Hometown Gallery, featuring history on Richmond's Star-Gennett Jazz History. The beauty of Richmond's Railroad Historic District is all the shops, entertainment, and restaurants are located within four city blocks, which makes it easy to explore everything the area has to offer.

History Comes To Life In The Richmond Furniture Gallery

Step into one of the stores in Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District and you're likely to discover someone willing to share a few lively stories of days gone-by. One shop where you'll find an intriguing collection of Richmond's history, art, murals, a gift shop, and vintage antiques on display is the Richmond Furniture Gallery. As the one of the witty poster we spotted says: "Expect to get a Big Kick out of this place!"

Upon entering the Richmond Furniture Gallery you'll find an assortment of old newspaper clippings and historic memorabilia on the area. Around every corner in the Richmond Furniture Gallery you'll find something surprising. The Self-Guided tours highlight Richmond's amazing Jazz era, and the history structure, which is known as the Miller Brother's Building.

Yes, the Richmond Furniture Gallery also has a wonderful selection of New Furniture; actually, three floors of furniture! We found beautiful living room and bedroom furnishings, comfortable dining sets, and fashionable and obscure accessories and accents to suit any style or decorative theme. Stop in to look around, try a couple of their fresh cookies, and say hi to the owner Roger, a delightful gentleman, who continues to work closely with his fellow merchants to revive Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District.

Weekly Musical Performances and Gatherings in Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District

While visiting the Richmond Furniture Gallery you will also hear music featuring musician's from Richmond's rich Jazz history. Drop by Richmond's Historic Railroad Depot District on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday and Saturday evenings to enjoy the musical performances held at Zini's Place, Little Sheba's, Joe's Pizza, Charlie's Coffee Bar, Doc Handy's, and the Star-Gennett Hometown Gallery.
