Take Flight At The Wilbur Wright Birthplace, By Melody Schubert: It takes courage to climb on a plane or for the adventurous; jump out of a plane with a parachute on your back. Near Hagerstown, Indiana we discovered what inspired Wilber Wright and his brother Orville to take flight at the Wilbur Wright Birthplace.

In late June you can join a special tour of the Elliot Stone underground quarry, and then join the festivities at the Limestone Heritage Festival. Our host, Elite Tours, 812-279-6941, offers most tours from Monday-Saturday by appointment. Guides are friendly and have a plenty of interesting tidbits to share on the tours.

Milton Wright and Susan Catherine Koerner Wright were married in 1859.  On April 16, 1867 in a small farm house near Millville, Indiana, Susan gave birth to Wilbur Wright, the third of their seven children. Entrepreneurs, Orville and Wilber worked together in several fields, including a printing company, a bicycle repair shop, and a bicycle manufacturing. It was in 1896 when Wilbur and Orville showed interest in aviation and began the long journey to the path of their first flight. Over ten years later Wilber took flight around the Statue of Liberty. Below a the million people in attendance at the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in New York City watched in awe.
