Schweitzer Mountain Resort, By Melody Schubert | ||||||

There are truly remarkable recreational opportunities in every region of Idaho – hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hunting, camping and much more. Idaho mountain ski resorts are ready to see the snow fly on another outstanding ski season. New lifts, runs and facilities abound, making this winter in Idaho really sizzle as a vacation spot to remember. Schweitzer Mountain Resort, located in North Idaho, is becoming an all-season, destination resort overlooking Lake Pend Oreille. With more than 2,500 acres of skiable downhill terrain and eight lifts, including Idaho’s only high-speed, six-passenger chairlift, this mountain resort is already a spectacular family or solo destination. The resort’s newest features include recently constructed ski-in, ski-out accommodations and additions to the Stomping Grounds Terrain Park, which include the new Terrain Garden, featuring entry-level and intermediate jumps and rails, along with the addition of six Planet Snow Design rails. Another new adventure to be had at Schweitzer is SHERPA-cat skiing, backcountry skiing for the experienced skier, on the west-facing backside of the mountain. The Selkirk Powder Company offers trips into 4,000 acres and along 1.5 miles of privately owned ridgeline of backcountry wilderness, with open fields and natural bowls, perfect for those wanting to get away from the crowd. Other winter adventures include snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Those looking for a more low-key adventure will enjoy an afternoon at the day spa, mountain market, swimming pool, fitness center or movie theater. Accommodations range from individual guest rooms to condominium suites in an extraordinary alpine-village atmosphere. Schweitzer Mountain Resort: "Stella" Is Idaho's Only 6 Person High-Speed Chairlift Stella is Idaho's only 6 person high-speed chairlift whisks visitors up 1550 feet in a mere 5 1⁄2 minutes. The loading station of the chairlift is a themed ride created by Disney Imagineer Geoff Puckett. Enter the loading station and step back into time into Phineus Schweitzer's inventor's barn. He named the lift in honor of his wife Stella so they could transport the 4 kids and themselves to the ridge top. Visitors to Stella are treated to some of the most family-oriented ski terrain on the mountain; The Northwest Territory consists of beautifully groomed and lightly-gladded runs on a gentle slope. Historic Treasures In The Historic Community Of Roseberry The Roseberry/Valley County Museum takes visitors back in time to an old Ghost Town. Stroll among the streets of Roseberry and imagine what it was like during its prime before the turn of the century when the townsfolk moved onto Donnelly. The Museum features a turn of the century church, an old school and city hall, store, residences, and farm machinery. The museum includes logging, woodworking tools, and a spinning wheel and loom used by local Finnish pioneers. Idaho Vacation Planning Order FREE Idaho Travel Brochures!.
