Milwaukee: City of Festivals, By Iris Dean

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin our family shared a week of exploring, a bit of learning, and discovery in a Genuine American City. The endless opportunities for all-around fun in the Greater Milwaukee area makes it a popular destination. Welcome to the City of Festivals. Each year Milwaukee celebrates its diversity with an abundance of entertaining ethnic and cultural festivals. These exciting festivities draw nearly one million attendees every year who join together to enjoy the activities at the annual Summerfest, one of the world’s largest music festivals.

Henry W. Maier Festival Park is home to the majority of the summer festivals. With a beautifully landscaped 75-acre festival ground on the lakefront, and thirteen permanent stages, plus a huge children’s PlayZone one can find a variety of activities to enjoy. As for festivals, well, take your pick, there’s the Polish Fest, Bastille Days, Festa Italiana, German Fest, African World Fest, Irish Fest, Mexican Fiesta, Oktoberfest, Indian Summer Festival, Russian Fest, Cajun Fest, Asian Moon Festival and don’t forget the Holiday Folk Fair. In other words, there’s plenty of excitement to experience in Milwaukee.

Summer in Milwaukee is a great time to gather your family and friends for the free outdoor concerts. Among the concerts is the weekly Jazz in the Park series on Cathedral Square, the River Rhythms concerts and River Flicks outdoor family films in Pere Marquette Park, and the ever-popular noon concerts at the permanent outdoor stage of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Miller Park - Miller Park is home to the Milwaukee Brewers and a highlight for any baseball fan who love the sports rich traditions. This new state-of-the-art ballpark features a unique fan-shaped, convertible roof reflects the architectural heritage of the Milwaukee while offering visitors the finest in ballpark amenities and fan comfort. Join the baseball fans “tailgating” along the Menomonee River, try the “Secret Stadium Sauce” on a bratwurst, or drop by Friday’s Front Row Sports Grill and the Fan Zone where you’ll find authentic Brewers merchandise.

What About The Suds? - Baseball and Beers go well together, so why not stop by and tour one of the breweries while you’re in town. You might notice of all the breweries available one stands out among the rest; Milwaukee is a Miller town. The Miller Brewery offers a interesting tour which takes you behind the scenes of its rich history in Milwaukee. It’s not the type of tour kids would enjoy though.

While children are allowed, most of the tour is based around the promotion of beer. This is a walking tour, so come prepared for the outdoor weather as you tours the grounds. Of course at the end of the tour you get to try up to three servings of your favorite Miller products. The glimpse into Miller’s historic past and free samples are worth a bit of walking if you’re a fan of beer.
