Family Fun In Waco, Texas, By Melody Schubert

Family Fun In Waco, Texas

Looking for the perfect place to stop over with the kids; try Waco, Texas. It is here that you'll find plenty of family-friendly things to experience. With hands-on activities for the child in all of us at the Art Center Waco and interactive exhibits at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, there is an opportunity for everyone to pick something fun to do.

When you drop in at the Art Center Waco and take a trip around the world without the need for a passport. Learn about different cultures and try your hand at folding Japanese origami, molding Turkish paper, and making French valentines. While exhibits may change throughout the year, you'll discover more than imagine at the Art Center in Waco. Then head over to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and test your sports knowledge in a trivia quiz. Kids will enjoy learning more about their favorite sports teams, and match their size to the average NBA players.

Every road trip through Central Texas requires at least a stop at the Dr Pepper Museum for a tour and genuine, hand-tapped, icy-cold Dr Pepper. Home of the world’s oldest major soft drink, the museum features a host of family-friendly exhibits, including a replica of the Old Corner Drug Store where Dr Pepper was invented, an animatron of pharmacist Charles Alderton explaining his invention, interactive exhibits designed for younger audiences, and a computer game that tests visitors’ knowledge of Dr Pepper history, just to name a few.

Little girls will love the historic doll collection displayed throughout the Earle-Napier-Kinnard House museum. They can learn about growing up in the late 1850s and imagine themselves as one of the five Earle children. They will also find the one-room brick house they all shared, which had no running water, so they used a tin tub for washing. While there were plenty of chores to keep the kids busy back in the day, they did enjoy some free to play as your kids can do in the Victorian playhouse.

Ancient History Comes To Life In Waco, Texas at the Mayborn Museum ComplexRanked as the second best children’s museum in Texas by Child magazine and the Association of Children’s Museums, the Harry and Anna Jeanes Discovery Center in the Mayborn Museum Complex engages children for hours on end. With 16 themed discovery rooms to choose from, they can try on hats and clothing from around the world, type on old typewriters, grind corn like the Huaco Indians used to do, stand inside a beating heart, try their hand as a weather forecaster (complete with television camera, green screen, and video monitor), or watch a miniature tornado form before their very eyes. There’s even a room for tiny tots, where the little ones can play until their big brothers and sisters have seen the rest of the museum.

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum is a favorite of kids as well! Here they can become official Junior Texas Rangers, and strap on an old-fashioned gun, and badge. Learn the history of these famous lawmen. For a true Texas experience families can catch a rodeo or weekend horse show at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex, located next door to Lion’s Park.
