Acoma Cultures Comes To Life At The Sky City Cultural Center & Haak’u Museum, By Melody Schubert

In this majestic landscape time slows as if to honor the past at the Acoma at the Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum, located at the foot of the mesa that has been home of the Acoma people for more than 1,000 years.

The architectural style of Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum is a reflection of the Pueblo and the surrounding landscape. The materials, architecture and direction the building walls face have been conscientiously chosen, and the T-shaped doorways and sandstone walls evoke Acoma ancestral architecture at Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon.

Decorative elements throughout the building, including hand carved beams, pottery chimneys, and metalwork, as well as stone, wood vigas and latillas and mica from the surrounding area were crafted by local Acoma artisans. And, the colors of the building are all drawn from the surrounding desert valley.

Along with exhibits of pottery, art, baskets and textiles the Acoma history comes to life through hands-on activites that include learning to bake traditional Acoma bread in a horno in a outdoor oven.

Traditional Native American cooking classes are also offered or you can sample traditional Acoma and New Mexican foods, and a variety of contemporary cuisine at the Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum’s Yaak’a Café.

On the tour available at the Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum you find yourself stepping into the San Esteban del Rey Mission, one of the largest Spanish missions in the New Mexico. There is a sense of magic in the air as you descend from the mesa on the centuries-old trail to capture a photo of the enormous and unusual rock formations.

The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak'u Museum hosts annual festivities that offer an even more thrilling glimpse of Acoma traditions:

The Feast of San Esteban:

Held in September, the Acoma honor their patron saint, Esteban, also known as Stephen, a pious 11th-century Hungarian king, during this festival that includes traditional foods, tribal dances, and interaction with the Acoma tribe.

Christmas Eve Celebrations:

On December 24, rooftops throughout the pueblo, and nine miles of roads leading up to Acoma Pueblo are adorned with more than 5,000 luminarias. As the luminarias are lit in the early evening, Acoma becomes a dramatic light display celebrating the holiday season, further accentuated by the absence of electric lights in the Acoma Valley.
