Model Train Fans Take To The Rails In Union County, NJ, By Eric Worley & Stacy Delray

Model Train Fans Take To The Rails In Union County, NJ -

Travel the rails of time at a affordable event featuring model trains in Union County, New Jersey. This is also a great holiday activity the whole family and anyone who loves model trains will enjoy!

In Union County you'll find a spectacular 1600 square foot model train layout is on display for the holiday season, complete with a light and sound show, at Union County’s Lenape Park in Union Township. The HO scale layout is renowned for its dedication to realistic detail and life-like railroading functions.  Owned and operated by a non-profit group, The Model Railroad Club, Inc., it is the largest display of its kind in North America.

Show days and times run from Late November through Mid December. The HO display features a long-distance freight and passenger railroad, an interurban line with trolleys and commuter trains, and a short line representing the workhorse trains that chug through parts of Union County. A double-decked N Scale layout is also on display along with the popular “Classic Streamliners on Parade.”

In addition to the holiday shows, the Mallery Center is open all year on Saturdays from 1:00-4:00 pm.  A modest admission fee is charged at the door on non-show days. The partnership between The Model Railroad Club and Union County dates back to 1974.   The Club funded the design, construction, and expansion of the Mallery Center on County property. It also funds the operation and maintenance of the building.

The layout is permanently housed in the A. Paul Mallery Model Railroad Center at 295 Jefferson Avenue, off Route 22 East in Union, behind the Home Depot. Advance tickets for the holiday show are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for children ages 3 - 15 and $5.00 for seniors aged 60 and over.  Tickets purchased at the door on show days are higher. Children ages 2 and younger are free.  The building is wheelchair-accessible and parking is free. To buy advance tickets, visit www.tmrci.org or come to the Mallery Center any Saturday, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
