Indulge Your Taste For Sweats At Local Indy Restaurants, By Melody Schubert

Among the great Indy restaurants serving up delicious chocolate are Petite Chou that will offer a half dozen different kinds of gourmet chocolate drinks along with incredible chocolate pastries and desserts. Instead of afternoon tea, here, you can indulge in a “Haute Chocolate” or high chocolate as opposed to a high tea. For a tasty treat and a day exploring amazing works of art visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It is here you'll find Puck’s, and Pastry Pete" at the restaurant that makes all kinds of intricate chocolates in flavors like Earl Grey Tea, and Lavender.

Shapiro’s Delicatessen and Bakery: It's not every baker who gets to design his own production facility. Luckily for bakery manager John Poulsen, that's exactly what he was able to do for Shapiro's Bakery and Deli. For example, the building's stock room has a separate air-conditioning system to keep the room at 60° to 62°F all year. It’s kept that cool so his ingredients can be mixed into dough's and batters without using ice in the summer, and without requiring other adjustments in the winter. Customers can also watch the bakers at work, which builds an appetite, and customers who dine in the cafeteria certainly are reminded to save room for dessert. In fact, individual servings of cakes and pies are displayed right at the beginning of the cafeteria line, making it hard for customers to bypass something from the bakery. John prefers the slow, even heat produced by deck ovens, and notes that the cakes don't dry out during baking because there's no air circulation to drive off moisture too quickly.

Chocolate Shops About Town: Indy also has plenty of unique chocolate shops where one taste of their delightful treats is a memorable moment. Among these are Endangered Species Chocolate, this Indy-based company creates all-natural and organic chocolate that is sold across the country and in other parts of the world. The company uses chocolate as a medium to spread awareness and make an impact on the growing number of species disappearing from Earth. Their mission defines endangered as a triad - that all species, habitat and humanity are endangered on our planet, not just animals on a list. A percentage of net profits are donated to organizations supporting species recovery, habitat conservation and compassion for fellow humans. The ethically traded, shade-grown milk and dark chocolate bars can be found in most natural food markets and co-ops, including Whole Foods, along with Target and many chain grocery stores. Online they also sell handbags made from obsolete chocolate bar wrappers and other eco-gifts.

The SouthBend Chocolate Company got its start making chocolates under a license from the University of Notre Dame. Its first three products were the Domer, Rockne and Nuts for ND. SBCC now makes licensed chocolates for Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Michigan. They also wholesale their high-quality line of chocolates to confectionery stores, gift shops, gourmet food stores, coffee shops and gift basket companies. There are now 10 company-owned stores in northern Indiana and 10 franchised locations throughout Indiana and Michigan. Double-dipped peanuts have a layer of chocolate so thick it’s hard to find the nut.

The Best Chocolate in Town is known for their truffles that are made of rich whipped chocolate infused with fresh ingredients and flavors. They have a broad range of more than 40 flavors, changing flavors all the time including everything from Dark Chocolate Guinness Truffles to Ginger Wasabi Truffles. They pride themselves in coming up with unique flavor combinations and make good toffee as well.

Bijoux Chocolat: one of Indy’s newest chocolatiers, has an interesting line of contemporary artisan chocolates.  Artisan Chocolatier, Todd Kennedy, creates whimsical and vibrantly hand-painted chocolate truffles with dark Belgian chocolate, which are adorned with pure cocoa butter for a delicious treat. Luxurious creme fondant, silky ganache and perfectly spiced pecan praline are some of the decadent components awaiting visitors at Bijoux Chocolat. Bijoux chocolates contain pure ingredients and no unnatural preservatives or artificial flavors.
