Tucked in along the Central Coast of
California is City of El Paso de Robles or Paso Roble. One
could also call it it Paso, which many do. Whatever you call
it does not matter; it is the rolling countryside and
natural beauty of the area which will draw you back year
after year.
Paso Robles has been known as “California’s oldest watering place” since around 1795 because if the natural springs and mud baths. In the later 1860's people traveled from as far away as Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and even Alabama to soak in the healing waters of Paso. Drury James and the Blackburn brothers issued a pamphlet advertising “El Paso de Robles Hot and Cold Sulphur Springs and the Only Natural Mud Baths in the World” in 1882, and it was not long before this was the place everyone wanted to visit. The town burst into a social haven, with first class accommodations and comfortably furnished cottages for families.
Today, Paso Robles is still a favorites destination for many, and an California jewel just waiting to be discovered. So to kick of the New Year here are a few Travel To Do's to consider when planning your next trip.
DO travel to places off of the beaten
path - Europe, Las Vegas, Napa are all lovely…but
haven’t we been there? To-do go-to:
Paso Robles California.
Located between San Francisco and California on the Central
Coast. Charming, accessible and off the radar.
DO travel domestically - The
exotic, the gourmet, the unusual – yes, it’s here locally.
Why not have a back-yard adventure?
To-do go-to:
San Luis Obispo airport handles domestic and
international travel, and you can be in Paso Robles within
45 minutes after landing. Anyone in California can gas up
their car and be in
Paso Robles
within hours.
DO Re-think your wine tour -
The great wine destinations are well…great. But wouldn’t you
like to discover a winery before thousands of your closest
friends do?
To-do go-to: Over 200
wineries, a singular terroir producing award-winning reds
and a backpack of sustainable growing, organic foodstuffs
and gourmet items all await you in Paso Robles.
DO enjoy champagne travel on a beer
budget - Our budget may be tight, but our taste in
travel hasn’t changed. We want new experiences,
comfortable-to-luxurious accommodations, lots of options for
activities, great dining. Spending less and getting less
isn’t a deal. The key is to spend less and get more.
To-do go-to: Over 1000
hotel and specialty rooms from family-affordably to uber-luxurious,
at well under the price points of other wine regions.
Restaurants, boutiques, events – all generally priced at
wallet-loving levels. Enjoy more – spend less in
Paso Robles.
DO take the Family - Think
beyond the mouse ears - Theme parks are wonderful family
experiences. However, isn’t it time to enjoy a destination
that features more than costumed characters and long lines
for rides? Water parks, horse back riding , cowboys, state
fair, classic car shows…the list goes on and on. There is no
way to be bored in Paso Robles…for the young and young at
heart.
DO get outdoors - Didn’t your
mom tell you to go outside and play? What are you waiting
for? To-do go-to:
Hiking, camping, water skiing, golf (including four star
facilities) swimming, llama treks, the above-mentioned horse
back riding, bicycling (the Amgen Tour stops here), Lake
Nacimiento, fishing. You’re still reading? Pack your bags
and grab your gear.
DO find old-time America -
There may not be old fashioned gazebos and fresh lemonade in
your city, but isn’t that all the more reason to go enjoy
some? To-do go-to: PJ
parties at the local movie theatre, Santa during the
holidays, Cowboys walking down the main street, an
old-fashioned gazebo in the state park, smiling faces.
