County Charm And Natural Treasures Await At The Sequoyah Caverns and Ellis Homestead, Melody Schubert In 1841 when James Ellis packed up the family in Tennessee and moved to Valley Head, Alabama it was a long journey. This was a time when the wilderness was wild, and the roads were little more than cow paths. Today, the land on which James and his family built a log cabin, and later their frame house is now a a campground is today. Through hark work and dedication the Ellis Family cleared the landscape to carve the farmland out of a wilderness, and in the process gained hundreds of acres of land, including what is today Sequoyah Caverns. As with many Southern families, the Ellis clan were divided by the War Between the States. James, who is buried at the Chickamauga Battlefield, was a 2nd Lt. in the Union army. Three of his sons also fought in the Union army, while one served in the Confederacy. The farm began to prosper from the growing corn, cotton, wheat, and oats, making sorghum, and the sheep and cattle they raised, and by the turn of the century the Ellis family lived comfortably in Valley Head. Today, this rich history lives on through the direct descendants of James Ellis, who live and welcome guests to enjoy and explore the Homestead, and Sequoyah Caverns.
