The Treasure Hunters Club: Secrets of the Magical Medallions, Reviewed By Melody Schubert

What happens when four ordinary kids unlock the secrets of two magical medallions and realize maybe some secrets should have been left alone?

The Treasure Hunters Club: Secrets of the Magical Medallions takes us on the adventure as we follow unexpected twists and turns, to locate a powerful magic medallion. Three hundred years before Tommy Reed started his own Treasure Hunters Club as a way of emulating his famous treasure-hunting uncle ‘Diamond’ Jack Reed, a gypsy placed a magical ‘power of the light’ into a blue-stoned medallion to protect her people but was forced to throw it into the ocean when thieves tried to steal it from her. While Tommy knew nothing about the existence of the gypsy or her magical medallion, his uncle had, in fact, been commissioned to find it for a very wealthy and unscrupulous collector.

With the help of his crew and trusted assistant, Jack Reed accomplishes his goal. Finding four medallions, he discards two and keeps the ones that have strange markings around blue stones – giving one to the collector who hired him and sending the other to his nephew Tommy, knowing Tommy will be thrilled and will show it to his friends in the Treasure Hunters Club. Tommy soon realizes the medallion has special powers and he and his friends set out to do research at the library and uncover the medallion’s secrets.

From the first paragraph to the last page, Sean McCartney’s debut book, The Treasure Hunters Club: Secrets of the Magical Medallions, published by Mountainland, keeps you reading to see what happens next. It was the love of mystery he found as a child in the Hardy Boys series combined with the non-stop action from movies such as National Treasure and Indiana Jones that became the inspiration for McCartney to create his own unforgettable young characters in the first of his Treasure Hunters Club series.

Now he takes us along for the ride to discover that it takes both medallions placed together to create infinite power. When the collector realizes Reed has sent one to his nephew, the henchmen are sent to find Tommy. When Tommy gets captured the collector places the medallion over his own and unleashes a power that transforms him into a gigantic demon. A fight ensues between the collector and his evil followers, Tommy and his friends, Diamond Jack and his arch rival Slider, with everyone racing to claim the medallions in an exciting finale!

While McCartney’s debut book covers the antics of Tommy and his friends in 8th Grade, each new book in the series will follow the lives of his protagonists from young adulthood into high school and college where the treasure hunts get more dangerous and the excitement builds in intensity.
