Food, Fun, and Festivities At The Indiana State Fair, By Melody Schubert & Leroy Worley

The history of the State Fair dates back to the mid 1800's when several cities, including Lafayette, Madison, and Fort Wayne were among the first privileged to host this annual event. Indiana State Fairgrounds on East 38th Street welcomed Hoosiers at the official site for our State Fair on September 19, 1892. This year the Fair Ground gates open on August 6th. Festivities will continue until the17th. During this time over 750,000 people will enjoy a variety of events and entertainment during their visit to the Indiana State Fair.

This year's Indiana State Fair will feature exciting exhibits and events, including two great accomplishments in our countries history. The Corps of Discovery II: Lewis & Clark Exhibit celebrates the 200th anniversary of their amazing journey across the country. While the Children's Museum's "FLIGHT: Where Adventures Take Off" marks the 100th anniversary of the historic flight of the Wright brothers.

Children and adults alike will be amazes while they watch Bryan Berg, a 29-year-old Iowa State architecture professor, defy the laws of physics. Bryan has already beaten his 1992 Guinness record for the World's Tallest House of Free Standing Playing Cards several times. Each unique structure made completely out of playing cards is incredibly strong.

The Live Shark Encounter to be held in the Pfizer Fun Park throughout the fair. Learn interesting details about the habits and behaviors of several species of sharks in the 7,000-gallon saltwater aquarium. Browse through a wide selection of shark-related items available including teeth, jaws of different species, and photographs while you are there.

Kids who love skateboarding will be pumped for a day at the fair on August 12th at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m when VOICE Xtreme Air Shows Features Tony Hawk. Know as the "Michael Jordan of skateboarding," Hawk, made skateboarding history in 1999 by being the only skater to ever land a "900", a two-and-a-half mid-air flip.

These are only a few of the great events being held this year at the State Fair. The Indiana State Fairgrounds are located on the corner of East 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway in Indianapolis. Gate Admission is $6, children 5 & under are free. Parking is also free if available. Discount Tickets go on sale from July 1st  through August 5th.
