One of the
legends about Santa Barbara concerns its name; it is said that Spanish explores
were caught in a terrible storm along the coast and prayed for safety to Saint
Barbara, the patron saint of those in danger from fierce thunderstorms. Their
prays were answered, and they named it the area Santa Barbara in the saints
honor. Many cultures have
called Santa Barbara home, among these the Chumash Indians, the Spanish, and
Mexico before the City become part of the United States. Through this period
these cultures shared a common interest; each relied on farming and the natural
resources available. The area is also known for its wine industry, but
perhaps what sets it a par from other areas in California is Santa Barbara
Mission, which is a State and a National Historic Landmark

Today, it remains a historic treasure representing Santa Barbara's Chumash Indian and Spanish heritage. Tour the mission or stroll through the rose gardens across the street where many historic structures remain, including an old Spanish grist mill and ruins of the pottery kiln.

A seasonal general store is available & the park is within a 1/2 to Santa Barbara & Buellton. Refugio State Beach is located between Gaviota & El Capitan on HWY 101.
