Discover Warts and
Carnivores & More At the
San Diego Wild Animal
Park, By James and AJ
Grass
Explore the world of the carnivore at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park along with other special animal encounters. "Cats and Carnivores" is a amazing tour presented by the San Diego
Zoo's Wild Animal Park. Plus, you also get to meet a carnivore up close
while visiting special behind-the-scenes areas for tigers and lions,
two of the most specialized meat eaters in the world. In
addition to the "Cats and Carnivores" program, the San Diego Zoo offer
a Spring Camp at the Zoo, and other exciting events throughout the
year. Check the Zoo's website for current events and programs.
Warts And All: Visayan Warty Piglets - Born April 17, the piglets have previously been off exhibit with their
mother to allow for maternal bonding in a more intimate setting. Now
these three Visayan warty piglets are being introduced to a larger
enclosure and more of their own kind at the San Diego Zoo.
The San Diego Zoo works with a large, diverse collection of wild swine
from all over the world, one of the most diverse collections of wild
pigs in North America. The Zoo also exhibits red river hogs from
Africa, European wild boar, Bornean bearded pigs and a Western Forest
Hog, the only one displayed at a zoo anywhere in the world.
“These piglets are a pretty significant milestone for us,” said Alan
Van Luven, senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo. “We were the first zoo
ever to house these pigs outside the Philippines, and we really didn’t
know how well they would do in a zoo setting, or how well they would
breed. To have fifty births is pretty special.”
The critically endangered species, native only to Negros and Panay, two
small islands in the Philippines, are part of a breeding and
conservation program designed to preserve the species until habitat is
secured for their survival in the wild. The San Diego Zoo works with
the Philippine government and several other accredited zoos on this
conservation program. With these three piglets the San Diego Zoo has
had more than 50 of this species born.
