Anticipating Death Valley's Wildflower Season, By Iris Dean

Death Valley Flowers -  Looking forward to a better than average wildflower season in the California deserts, wildflower watchers have set up a “Death Valley Flowers” Facebook group to alert others where the wildflowers are blooming. Wildflower updates are posted by Death Valley National Park and the new Facebook group is found by searching for “Death Valley Flowers.” Photographs and updates are posted on it.

The wet winters often result in colorful blooms of cactus and wildflowers in Death Valley National Park and desert areas east of the Sierra. This year, the Armagosa River has been flowing steadily and water covers the lowest salt flats of Badwater Basin creating the infrequent appearance of Lake Manly, a shallow lake about eight inches deep and about three miles wide.

The National Park Service is now reporting tiny sprouts that appear like a “fuzz of green” on alluvial fans and hillsides. Within weeks those areas could be covered with wildflowers. Observers expect the wildflowers to bloom between late March and early April.

Guided Tours of Death Valley -  During your visit you can join the Guided Tours of Death Valley led by rangers. This is a great way to explore the canyons, historic mining sites, and salt flats. The best part of these tours is the insider tips and knowledge that Rangers share. Tours of Scotty's Castle are available year-round, and talks and walks based out of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center are presented from October to April.

Death Valley is generally sunny, dry, and clear throughout the year. The winters run through November to March, and are mild with occasional winter storms. The summers on the other hand can be extremely hot and dry; with temperatures above 120 degrees, so dress for the occasion when planning your visits. One important tip to remember is to wear sturdy walking year round.
