Riding The Rails -
This summer Pierre’s thesis research will take him throughout the United States on a train. The inspiration for the project dates back to Spring Break of his freshman year when Amtrak took him round trip from Boston to Dallas. The
four-day trip allowed him to meet people from all walks of life: a symphonic orchestra player, a college student going home, and a young mother with three children who was escaping her abusive boyfriend. Each person inspired him in different ways, and to them he feels greatly indebted.
Pierre’s thesis revolves around the simple question of why people opt for train travel? He will depart from Dallas and visit St. Louis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, West Glacier, Chicago, Cleveland,
New York City, Washington D.C., Charlotte, New Orleans, Houston, and Tucson. In total, the trip will take him through over thirty states.
